Dr Y.R. Ahuja, Ph.D (California) - 1985-86

Prof. Ahuja's interests in human genetics began early in his career at I.A.R.I, New Delhi where he carried out inheritance studies on traits like stuttering and blossomed after his Ph.D from California and during his 16 years service in the Department of Genetics, Osmania University.

His studies varied from inheritance of dermatoglyphics to cytogenetic variation in mental retardation, fragile syndrome, mutaginic effects of drugs on chromosomes and genetic effects of background radiation (monozyte sands of Kerala) and to his recent love on single cell electrophoresis for cancer diagnosis. Author of over 140 scientific papers, Prof. Ahuja co-edited a book with Prof. James V. Neel entitled "Genetic Micro-differentiation in Human and other animal population". He also edited a Text book on genetics for the Indira Gandhi National Open University.

In addition to ISHG as its President, Prof. Ahuja served twice as the Vice President of the Environment mutagen Society of India and as Member, International association of Environmental Mutagen Societies. Born in Banu (now in Pakistan), Prof. Ahuja is well known for the bits of humour and fun in his presentations, and has been honoured with the Best Scientist Award by the Bhagwan Mahavir Trust and nominated as Man of the Year (1995) by the American Biographical Institute.
