Dr. S.N. Naik, Ph.D (Bombay) - 1989-90

Coming from background of veterinary science, Dr Naik distinguished himself as s human geneticist with many outstanding contributions on the genetics of G6PD enzyme. In his career of over 30 years at the Cancer Research Institute, Dr Naik worked on haematology and comparative oncology and is well known for his discoveries of G6PD Cutch and Kalyan variants, Haploglobin variant variant in Ahirs, negative association of G6PD deficiency with cancer in Negroes, total deficiency of G6PD enzyme in spotted deer, the origin of horn cancer in cattle and for the development of several mutant strains of mice.

Dr Naik travelled widely to countries like Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Holland, USA and Switzerland. Among the many awards he received are, the WHO Post Doctoral Fellowship, University of Bern Visiting Fellowship, JC Patel Prize, Bai Ratnabai Gharada Oration Award, BGRC Foundation Day Award, H.M Bhatia Oration Award and the L.D. Sanghvi Oration Award of ISHG.

Elected twice to the Governing Council of ISHG. He was Treasurer during 1987-88 and eventually the President. He also served as the President of Bombay Hematology Group.
